Afterafaceupcard isdealton topof eachof Lhe facedowncards, thefacedowncard of eachpairisturnedover and voila-the only pairs in whichthesymbols matchare thosethatcorrespondtothesymbol namedbythespectator. To top it all off, the largeenvelopeis opened, and thesmallenvelopeis dwnpedout,The selectedcard is dumpedoutalso, and itmatchesthenamed symbol-avery startingclimax!SET-UP: YouneedastandardESP deck of 25 cardsconsisting of the 5 symbolsshownin Fig.1.1.Youalsorequire3small manila-style envelopesslightlylargerthanoneof theESPcards. However, theaudiencewillneverbe awareof morethanoneof Lhematanytime. You willalsoneed a fourthmanilaenvelopeslightlylargerthan theotherthreeandlargeenoughtoholdthesmallenvelopes. All fourenvelopesshouldbefairlyopaque.Lastly, you willneedsome circularstickers(Fig.1.2)and adabof magician's wax.Fig.1.1Fig.1.2You willneedtoprepare the envelopes in advance-asimple process.Startingwithoneof the smallenvelopes, take an old playingcardor oneoftheinstruction cardsthatcomes with mostESPdecksand fold it in half lengthwise (Fig.1.3).Now cui itsothat its widthis justahair lessthan thewidthoftheenvelope(Fig.1.4). Bywedgingthefoldedcard insidetheenvelopenearits mouth(Fig.1.5),farenoughinsidethatitdoesn'tshow,youhave preparedyourfirstenvelope,Fig.1.3~Fig.1.4 ..'gFI.1.5 :.::::::::- .:::::.~-- --_.The foldedcardactsas a dividerinsidetheenvelope. This isan AlanShaxonidea.Thecarddividestheenvelopeintotwocompartments. Thecleverthingaboutthisdivideris that if you place two cardsinthe prepared envelope, one card on either side of thedivider, you can dump out one card of your choosingdependingon how you bow thedivideras you open the mouth of the envelope.-3-For example, holdingtheenvelope seam side upward from above with your lefthand, bowthedividerdownward with yourleftorright index finger throughthe topoftheenvelope (Fig.1.6).Nowsqueezetheenvelope slightly between yourleftthumbandfingerstokeepthedividerbowedandtoopenthemouth oftheenvelope (Fig.1.7).Bytiltingthemouthoftheenvelopeslightly downward, onlythecardabovethedividerwillslideOUlThecardbelowthedividerremains intheenvelope, heldinplacebythedivider.Similarly, bybowingthedividerupwardwithyourrightthumb through thebottomoftheenvelope, only thecardbelowthedividerwill slide out,Fig.1.6Fig.1.7Now preparea secondsmallenvelopeand the largeenvelopewitha dividerin asimilarmanner.Placethe two prepared smallenvelopes onthetableseamside upward(Fig.1.8). In one of themplacea "circle"cardfacedownabovethedividerand a "plus"cardfacedownbelowthedivider.Intheotherplacea "wavylines"cardfacedownabovethedivideranda "square"cardfacedown belowthe divider. Then seal bothenvelopeswitha circularsticker (Fig.1.9).Fig. 1.8Fig. 1.9Fig.I.IO~Now placetheseam-side-up small envelope containing the circleandtheplusabovethedividerinthelargeenvelope, whichisalsoseamsideup(Fig.1.10). Ina similarmanner, place the smallenvelopebelowthedivider. Leavethelargeenvelope unsealed.Asa check, thepositionsoftheESPcardsinthelargeenvelopefrom thetopdownshouldbe:circle, plus, wavylines, square. If youare familiar withtheESPmnemonic ofthecirclerepresenting thenumberone, theplustwo, thewavylinesthree, thesquarefour, andthestar five, the cardsarein1,2,3,4 orderfromthetopdown.Forthelast bit of preparation, stack the remaining twenty ESPcardsby dealingthemin a faceup pileonthetablein thefollowing order:circle, plus, wavylines, square, star (that's one, two, threefour, five order). Repeatthesequence untilyouhavedealtalltheESPcardsexcept for one remaining leftover star (Fig. 1.11). Flipthepilefacedownandplacethestarfacedownon topof ittocompletethestack.
